Rhubarb Fest 2015 – a great success!

Wow! June 6 was a hot and beautiful day for the third annual Rhubarbfest. Our water station was very well used and hundreds of people came out to enjoy the festival.

We once again collected donations for the Calgary Food Bank and thanks to the generosity of people attending we collected three large boxes of food donations.

This event would not be possible without a small army of volunteers. This year we had over 50 volunteers help make the festival happen, including 30 from Youth Central and 25 from the community. We rely heavily on Youth Central for volunteer support at our community events and we are grateful to have them as a partner. A huge thank you to the community volunteers that came out to help set up the festival, take on key positions during the festival and assist with the tear down of the festival! We truly appreciate everything you did and hundreds of people had a fantastic day due to your efforts.

  • 750 attendees
  • 58 volunteers
  • 47 vendors and organizations
  • 4 bands
  • 82% of our waste recycled or composted
  • 3 boxes of donations for the Food Bank
  • 500 sausages and 400 pieces of rhubarb pie

This year we partnered with Village Brewery and had a beer garden. We cooked up Spolumbo’s sausages on the BBQ, served up strawberry-rhubarb pie. Plus, Marble Slab was on site with delicious ice cream on a super hot day. Mac’s Froster Van was popular as people lined up for their slushies. We partnered with The Peak 95.3 radio station and they were very supportive in promoting our festival.

We had four bands perform this year: Michael Wood Band, Jenavive, Connor James and Mitch Belot. We once again had a market place which included over 40 tables of local artists and artisans, Calgary Weekend Market, City departments, local businesses and organizations. The City of Calgary mobile skatepark was on location and it was fun to watch the skateboarders pull off different tricks.

There was a lot for kids to take part in and the following onsite activities were quite popular:

  • Sky High Bouncers
  • Butterfield Acres Petting Zoo
  • Springfree Trampolines
  • Terrrrrific Face Painting
  • The Craft Zone
  • The Activity Zone

This year we partnered with Green Event Services to help us with waste management at Rhubarb Fest. This was a huge success. Marble Slab Creamery, Village Brewery, Mac’s Froster and Good Earth Cafe all used compostable product for their cups and containers. The community association used compostable products for the BBQ: plates, napkins, and cutlery. Plus, the drink cups at the water station were also compostable.

Due to the efforts of everyone involved we were able to divert 82% of our waste away from the landfill. In fact, 53% of our waste was diverted to compost. A total of 13.86kg of waste went to the landfill compared to 64.71kg of waste that was diverted to compost, mixed recycling or beverage container recycling.
